Getting started
What is Wortwabe?
A website and app for learning German vocabulary from A1 to B2. You read short connected texts, collect words, recall them in sentences at the right moment, and use them in your own writing. Your learning companion is Nahla, a bee.
Who is it for?
Adults and teenagers who learn German, especially people preparing for Goethe/ÖSD/telc exams, studies or work in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Interface languages are German, English and Arabic.
Is it free?
Yes. Studying, reviewing, reading, the gap check, contrasts and statistics are free and unlimited. Accounts get a small free daily allowance of AI and cloud audio. A paid plan with more AI is planned but not available yet.
Do I need an account?
No. You can study as a guest. Your progress then stays in this browser on this device. Create an account if you want to use several devices or keep a cloud copy of your progress.
Which level should I start with?
Take the adaptive placement test (6–8 minutes) during the first start, or pick A1, A2, B1 or B2 yourself. You can change the level later in Settings.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Wortwabe works in modern browsers on phones, tablets and computers. You can install it to your home screen like an app (browser menu → "Add to home screen" / "Install").
Does it work offline?
After the first full visit, most study features work without internet. AI features, cloud sync and cloud audio need a connection.
How learning works
What is the learning method?
A loop of five steps that research supports: read comprehensible text → collect words you want to use → understand each word (meaning, collocations, contrasts) → recall it with spacing → use it in writing. The "Method" page explains the research behind it.
What is spaced repetition (FSRS)?
Wortwabe schedules each word with FSRS-6, a modern memory model also used by Anki. After each answer it estimates how long you will remember the word and shows it again just before you would forget it. You see "stability", "difficulty" and "recall probability" under Statistics.
Why do I have to type the word instead of just clicking "I know it"?
Recognising a word and producing it are different skills. Typing it into a sentence trains production, which is what you need for speaking and writing. Only typed recall counts for the schedule.
What do the four buttons after a card mean?
Again (forgot), Hard, Good, Easy. Be honest: the schedule adapts to your answers. You can undo the last rating.
How many new words per day should I learn?
10–15 is a good default. More new words mean many more reviews a few weeks later. If more than about 150 reviews are due, pause new words for a few days.
What happens if I skip a day?
Nothing breaks. Due cards wait for you. Your streak may reset unless you have a streak freeze.
Why does the same word come back so often at the start?
New words go through short learning steps (after about 1 minute and 10 minutes) before they get longer intervals.
Why are articles coloured?
To build a visual link between a noun and its gender: der is always blue, die always red, das always green. Plural-only words (die Eltern) stay uncoloured because "die" there is plural, not feminine.
Features
What is the Gap check (Lückencheck)?
A fast test of the official Goethe A1–B1 list plus our B2 selection. In "Recognise" mode you mark words as known, unsure or new. In "Produce" mode you type the word into a sentence. Only words you miss go into your Recall, so you don't waste time on words you already know.
What is Recall (Abruf)?
Your daily review. Each card shows the meaning and a sentence with a gap; you type the German word. The schedule decides which cards are due.
What is in Reading?
Over 40 connected original texts (the story of Nour in Leipzig, A1→B2, plus topic texts). Key words are highlighted; tap a word to see its meaning, collocations and examples, and add it to your Recall. You can also generate new texts with AI that use your weak words.
What is the Lexicon?
Our curated vocabulary with collocations, verb + preposition patterns, prefix families, example sentences and levels. Search it and add entries to your Recall.
What is the dictionary?
A reference dictionary with about 36,000 German words: meanings in English (and Arabic where available), full verb conjugation, noun cases and plurals, adjective comparison. Search in German or English, even with inflected forms (ging → gehen).
What is Differences (Unterschiede)?
79 sets of easily confused words — similar in meaning (brauchen / benötigen / erfordern) or in form (bestehen / verstehen / entstehen) — each with a core rule, examples and a short test.
What is Training?
Quick extra rounds: flashcards, matching pairs, picture cards with articles, a speaking exercise, shadowing and a listening dictation with our audio stories. Training gives XP but does not change your Recall schedule.
What is shadowing?
You listen to a German sentence and repeat it right after it (or speak along at the same time, best with headphones). You can record yourself and play your recording right after the original to compare stress, melody and speed. The recording stays in your browser tab only; it is never uploaded and is deleted when you move to the next sentence.
How does the speaking exercise work?
Your browser's speech recognition checks whether the target word and sentence were recognised. It is not a pronunciation analysis. Your browser asks for microphone permission first.
What is Writing?
You get a task with target words, write a short text, and get AI feedback sentence by sentence: corrections, which target words you used correctly and more natural collocations.
What is "My finds"?
Words you collect from your own books, films or courses, always with the sentence where you found them.
Where do the pictures on cards come from?
From the open Noto Emoji icon set, so they look the same on every device. Pictures are memory aids; the meaning is always shown next to them in picture exercises, so a picture never has to be guessed alone.
Is there audio?
Word audio is being produced with an AI voice (labelled as AI-generated). Until it is available, your browser's voice is used where possible.
AI features
What can the AI do?
Write new reading texts with your weak words, write extra example sentences, and give feedback on your writing.
How many AI uses do I get?
Accounts get three shared AI and cloud-audio requests per Cairo calendar day. Guests have no server-funded allowance; a Pro plan with more AI is planned (details are not decided yet).
Can the AI be wrong?
Yes. AI can make mistakes, also in grammar corrections. Treat its feedback as a suggestion and check important points.
Which AI is used?
Google Gemini, through our server. Your request text is processed by Google (see Privacy Policy). Do not enter personal data.
Is there a Pro plan?
Pro is planned: far more AI per day, without any key or setup. Price and details are not decided yet; see Plans in the app.
Progress, XP and streaks
What is XP?
Points for study activity. They motivate you; they are not a test score.
What is the daily goal?
An XP target you set (for example 30 XP). Reaching it fills today's honeycomb cell.
What is a streak and a streak freeze?
A streak counts days in a row with study. A freeze protects one missed day. You can earn bonus freezes, for example through accepted issue reports.
Where do I see my progress?
Statistics shows reviews, retention, card states, level coverage and your Goethe-list progress.
Account, sync and data
How do I create an account?
Choose "Create account", use email and password or Google, and confirm. A second factor (authenticator app) protects your account.
Why do I need a second factor (2FA)?
It protects your progress and account even if your password leaks. You need an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Aegis.
How does sync work?
When signed in, your learning profile is saved to the cloud and loaded on your other devices. If two devices changed the same data, Wortwabe keeps a conflict copy so nothing is silently lost.
Can I use several tabs?
Yes, but study in one tab at a time for the cleanest sync.
How do I back up my data?
Settings → Data & backup → Export. Save the JSON file somewhere safe. Do this regularly, especially as a guest.
I cleared my browser and my progress is gone. Can you restore it?
Guest progress lives only in your browser, so we cannot restore it. With an account, sign in again to load your cloud copy. Imported backups restore a profile too.
How do I delete my account?
Write to [email protected] from your account email. Self-service deletion is planned.
Do you sell my data or show ads?
No.
Content and sources
Where does the vocabulary come from?
All meanings and example sentences in the course are written by Wortwabe. We used the official Goethe/ÖSD word lists and common textbook vocabulary only as checklists to find words we were missing.
Where does the dictionary data come from?
From the German Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0). Where a word is also in our course, our own meaning replaces Wiktionary's.
Is Wortwabe an official Goethe product?
No. Wortwabe is independent and not affiliated with the Goethe-Institut, ÖSD, telc or any publisher.
I found a mistake. What do I do?
Use "Report an issue" (in the menu or About). Accepted reports count towards the Bug Hunter badge and bonus freezes.
Technical help
The app shows an old version after an update.
Reload the page twice. If that does not help, close all Wortwabe tabs and open it again. The app updates itself in the background.
Nothing happens when I tap the microphone.
Check that your browser allows microphone access for wortwabe.com and that no other app is using the microphone. Some browsers do not support speech recognition.
Audio does not play.
Check device volume and silent mode. On iPhone, the ring/silent switch can mute web audio.
Which browsers are supported?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Very old browsers may not work.
How do I install Wortwabe as an app?
Chrome/Edge: install icon in the address bar or menu → "Install". Safari on iPhone: Share → "Add to Home Screen".
How do I switch interface language or theme?
Use the language buttons (DE / EN / العربية) and the sun/moon button in the header, or Settings.
About
Who makes Wortwabe?
Wortwabe is a product of Viafacta. It was started by a learner of German who wanted a tool that turns recognised words into words you can actually use.
How can I follow updates?
The bell icon shows what's new. You can also subscribe to release emails on the Updates page.
